Take some cling wrap and place it over your ipad or your computer screen. Use a permanent marker and draw horizontal and vertical lines 1/3 and 2/3s of the way through the square. It should look like Tic Tac Toe.
Then watch any movie trailer. Count how many times the rule of thirds is NOT used.

For the most visually arresting photo or video, your subject or subjects should land where any two lines cross. Think about what elements of the photo are most important, and try to position them at or near the lines and intersections of the grid. They don't have to be perfectly lined up as long as they're close..
